TBR Jar (2018) Wrap Up & TBR Jar for 2019

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And with limited time before the end of the year, I thought I might squeeze two posts into one (especially as they are relevant to the other.)
Enjoy!

TBR Jar (2018)- How It Went
What I Accomplished
1. 1 Stephen King book- It
2. Graphic Novel/Manga- A Wrinkle In Time
3. The Help, by Kathryn Stockett
4. VE Schwab- The Monsters of Verity duology
5. A Shadow Bright and Burning & A Poison Dark and Drowning, by Jessica Cluess- Having read the first book, I'm counting this, and I will carry on with this challenge in 2019.

What I Didn't Accomplish
1. The Dark Artifices trilogy, by Cassandra Clare- I currently own the books in this trilogy (I bought Queen of Air and Darkness literally yesterday) and this is going to be one of the first trilogy's that I pick up in 2019.
2. The Witchlands trilogy, by Susan Dennard- I don't think I'm going to pick this trilogy up any time soon. I have no motivation to delve into this world, meet the characters, and read the story.

TBR Jar for 2019
1. The Dark Artifices, by Cassandra Clare

2. A Poison Dark and Drowning, by Jessica Cluess- I will get to this at some point, if I get to finish the trilogy it'll be fantastic, if not, at least I will still have completed the TBR Jar.

3. 1 Stephen King book- I want to pick up another Stephen King book again this year, because I thoroughly enjoyed IT, and I kind of want to read more Stephen King for some reason. I might pick up Carrie, or Misery. But I want to read more horror, and I feel like Stephen King is the way to start.

4. Book 4 in the Three Dark Crowns series (I think it'll be called Last Dark Queen, but no title is confirmed yet.)- I just finished Two Dark Reigns, and I really enjoyed it. All I know is stuff is going to go down and I need to get my hands on it. So it makes sense to make it one of my TBR Jar Challenges.

5. Skulduggery Pleasant Book 12- This is the concluding book for the second part of the Skulduggery Pleasant series. It comes out in June and after the twist ending of the last book, I cannot wait to see how it all wraps up!

6. Muse of Nightmares (Strange the Dreamer #2), by Laini Taylor- I got this book yesterday with my Waterstones Christmas voucher and I can't wait to read the concluding book to the Strange the Dreamer duology.

Okay! That is my TBR Jar for 2019, and also my wrap up for this year. I appreciate that the description was kind of vague, but it's a long post, and I will get more into detail when I actually read these books!
Right, I hope you have a lovely weekend full of reading, or writing! I will be back on Monday with my 2018 Wrap Up, so make sure you keep your eye out!

Favourite Books of 2018

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And I'm coming at you today with my Favourite Reads of 2018!
Just bear in mind, these are my favourite reads that I read this year, they weren't necessarily released this year.
You can check out all the books that I've read this year on my Goodreads page (or I might write a post about it!)
Enjoy!

1. Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer #1), by Laini Taylor
This was my first Laini Taylor book that I had read, and because 1) the book was huge and 2) the amazing reviews kept me from picking this book up for the longest time. But of course, because it's on this year's favourite's list, all the hype was absolutely accurate. The language that Laini Taylor uses in her novel is just so beautiful and poetic, you can't help but love her novel, her characters, everything. Muse of Nightmares is going to be one of the first books after Christmas, and I can't wait to pick up the concluding book in this wonderful duology!

2. Fireblood (Frostblood #2), by Elly Blake
This book has to be the surprise of the year. After the first book in the trilogy, I wasn't really expecting much from the following book, because I didn't really know what else I could learn about these characters, and the world. But to be honest, I didn't realise how much I needed to pick up this book until I did. It was the perfect follow on to the first book, because we got to find out more about Ruby, her heritage, and the totally opposite world of the Firebloods. I would go as far to say that this was my favourite book of the trilogy, because it was such an easy book to pick up and become invested in.

3. P.S I Still Love You (To All the Boys I've Loved Before #2), by Jenny Han
As much as I enjoyed this trilogy, I think it's this book, out of all three, that I love just that little bit more. The writing was a bit more mature, like you can tell the transition that's been made in terms of language between the first and second books. And what's great about that is that you can tell that Lara Jean has made that transition herself. Also, you get more of a perspective on the side characters, as well as the main ones. Both the events in the first book and the second combine to make this wonderful story full of light-hearted and funny moments that make this book a pleasure to read.

4. The Well of Ascension (Mistborn #2), by Brandon Sanderson
Again, with this trilogy, I loved the entire trilogy, I want to pick up more Brandon Sanderson as soon as humanly possible, but the second one is definitely my favourite out of the three. The world is so immense, so detailed, as are the characters, and the plot is on a whole other level than anything I've ever read (with the exception of IT by Stephen King.) If you are a fan of epic fantasy, then I deplore you to pick this trilogy up.

5. Children of Blood and Bone (Children of Orisha #1), by Tomi Adeyemi
It is no secret that everybody seems to love the first book in this new fantasy series, and I am no exception. I could not put this book down, it was just one of those books that you have no trouble flying through. There was so much that was good in this book, that I couldn't help but love every single chapter. I cannot wait to delve into the next book in the series, and I doubt I'm alone in this. Fast paced, amazing characters, nothing too much or little explained. A phenomenal world. I'm hooked.

Okay! So those are my Favourite Books of 2018! I know there aren't many, but I read so many fantastic books this year that I couldn't pick too many!
What were your favourite reads of the year? Let me know in the comments!

Okay! I hope you have a lovely Christmas, and I will see you all soon!

12 Days of Christmas Book Tag

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And it's time for my monthly book tag!
As it's December, I will be doing the 12 Days of Christmas Book Tag!
Enjoy!

_________________________________________________________________________________

ON THE SECOND DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
TWO TURTLE DOVES
Love is in the air, what is your one true pairing?
The one and only Clary/Jace. The things they go through throughout the book series, how can they not be the pairing that springs to mind?
_________________________________________________________________________________

ON THE THIRD DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
THREE FRENCH HENS
In the spirit of threes, what is the best trilogy you have read?
This year, the best trilogy I have to have read is the Mistborn trilogy, by Brandon Sanderson. I just love how in depth everything is, particularly the world building.

___________________________________________________________________________________

ON THE FOURTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
FOUR CALLING BIRDS
Since series usually consist of four or more books, what is your favourite series?
The Noughts and Crosses series, by Malorie Blackman. I've re-read this series a number of times since I came into contact with it 8 years ago.

__________________________________________________________________________________

ON THE FIFTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
FIVE GOLDEN RINGS
One ring to rule them all! Who is your favourite villain?
I don't actually have a favourite villain, funny enough. There's IT, who is creepy as hell; there's Flora Banks' mother, then there's the undeniable Voldemort.

___________________________________________________________________________________

(From this point, everything is going to be in bold, because I can't change it back to normal, for some reason.)

ON THE SIXTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
SIX GEESE-A-LAYING
Creation is a beautiful thing. What is your favourite world/world building?

Other than Mistborn, which I mentioned earlier, the universe of Harry Potter has to be the one.

___________________________________________________________________________________

ON THE SEVENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
SEVEN SWANS-A-SWIMMING
Who needs seven swans when all it takes is one animal sidekick? Who's your favourite animal sidekick?
Animal side-kick? I don't think I've read a book with an animal side-kick! Can anybody recommend one?

__________________________________________________________________________________

ON THE EIGHTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
EIGHT MAIDS A MILKING
Milk is so 18th century. Which book series' takes beverages/food to a whole new level?
All that she can see, by Carrie Hope Fletcher
From the point of view of a baker!

_________________________________________________________________________________

ON THE NINTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
NINE LADIES DANCING
Dancing is just one skill of a lady. Who is your favourite kick-ass lead?
This is one of the older protagonist, Katniss Everdeen. The first kick-ass lead I've ever read, and she remains my favourite to this day.

_______________________________________________________________________________

ON THE TENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
TEN LORDS-A-LEAPING
How about your favourite leading lad?
Matt, from the Power of Five series (Anthony Horowitz.)

ON THE ELEVENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
ELEVEN PIPES PIPING
What is your favourite book or bookish thing with a musical influence?

ON THE TWELTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS, MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME
12 DRUMMERS DRUMMING
Drum roll please... what is your favourite read of this year?
I think I'm going to have to go with...
Children of Blood and Bone, by Tomi Adeyemi.

_______________________________________________________________________________

I TAG:
Everybody! If you want to do this tag, you can!
It was tones of fun, even though it was a long one, and it had some very interesting questions.

So that's the 12 Days of Christmas Book Tag! I hope you enjoyed it, let me know what you thought in the comments, so we can chat about it!
I hope you have a good day, and I will see you soon.

Pennies In A Hat, an Original Story

Pennies In A Hat

I pull my sunglasses over my eyes, shielding them from the sun. Too bright. Almost sighing  at the almost instant relief they give me, I take a brief look at my watch. Shit, I think noticing how many people there are between me and the corner, 10 minutes to opening. No time to even get a Danish pasty. I almost roll my eyes.
Dodging past people, I consider making a scene so I don't have to go to work, the banging on the side of my head right now. I start to calculate whether I'd have the space to faint without actually injuring myself, when I hear something faintly, in the distance.
Music, I think, feeling the corners of my mouth turning upwards. I make my way towards the music.

I find myself at the platform, where I go for a deli sometime, though it looks different to usual. Usually there's only one or two people making their way to the various different places to go in London. But now, the platform is full of people, all seemingly crowding round something, which is also where the music is coming from. I head towards where the crowd is gathered.
What do I see? A youngish boy, moving from skateboard, and dancing, being spurred on by the ever-growing crowd. Not what I was expecting.
Glancing at my watch, I hastily make my way to the crowd, hoping for a chance to talk to this boy and introduce myself. But as soon as I get over there, I see there is no way, there's just two many people. Never mind getting a pastry, I'm going to be late.
Looking around for inspiration, I notice a slightly crumpled, blue hat with some change and notes inside. Obviously the boy's takings for the day.
Sighing, I reach down into my sock, grab my handy notebook and pen, scribble "Matt Richardson- Music Producer- 07452618552",slip it into his hat, and head off to work.

* * * * * * * * * * *

My feet are at the ground, trying not to trip. Since when did it get so dark? I can't even see my watch in front of my face. Rocking back and forth, I try to keep my balance. I should have eaten more at lunch, I probably wouldn't feel this light-headed if I had.
Just keep your head up Matt, then you can't fall.
But I did. I didn't even realise I'd fallen until I heard a shout:
"Watch it! I was trying to sleep!" The voice was gruffier than I'd thought it would be, especially as it was coming from the skateboard/dancer from earlier.
"Sorry, sorry, I didn't recognise you! You're that boy from earlier! You were amazing!" I couldn't help but grin, especially as it was the best thing that'd happened all day.
"Thanks mate." His eyes don't make eye contact with mine. Digging his hands into his pocket, he leans down to pick up his one blanket and goes to lie back down on the platform he was dancing on just hours before.

An idea pops into my head. By this point, the boy has already gathered on the floor, ready to brave another night on the street. I go up to him, give him a little nudge with my leg, making sure that he is still conscious.
"Get up. Your staying round mine." I keep walking.
And without another word, he gets up.

* * * * * * * * *
I set the two cups of tea down on the table and glance at my companion. He's had a shower, dried and brushed his hair, and borrowed some of my clothes, so he looks a lot more presentable. But there's still a look in his eyes.
"So..." I stare at him, straight in the face.
"So..." He stares straight back.
I push the mug towards him. "Have some tea." He eyes the tea, but he doesn't drink.
Biting my lip, I say: "So what's your name?"
He remains silent.
"Okay..."My eyes darting around my tiny apartment, I'm trying to hype myself up, to say what I want to say.
Time's up.
"You've got talent." I wait for his response.
"WHAT did you say?"
"You've got talent, and I think you should be signed with an agent." I reach for my mug of tea.
"Are you out of your mind?!" He was staring at the door, thinking of leaving.
He looks me straight in the eye. "I'm fine." And before I can make a move, he's out the door.
Hmmmm... drumming my fingers on the table, I start to think.
* * * * * * * * * *
"Alright mate, see you soon." I hang up the call.
Right on time.
I'm at the platform, watching the kid (whom I still don't know his name) killing it with his skateboarding/break-dancing routine. I just hope he gets here soon.
Here's the plan: I have a friend from high-school who is at a dancing agency. He scouts all over the country, and I have managed to get him over to London. He's due to arrive any minute.
And then, I realise that the boy is staring right at me. I walk a little closer to the crowd.
I see my friend, motion to him. He comes closer. The boy is still staring at me.
"This is him. I don't know his name, but I do know that he is sleeping on the street. What do you think?"
"Wow." And the rest is history.
* * * * * * * * * *
This was two years ago. The boy is now in a troupe of break-dancers, touring round the country at present. When he's not touring, he stays with me, and I am in the process of adopting him, as he is under 18. And his name is Jacob.
As for me, I find I'm a lot happier, having someone else in the house from time to time. It's cool to have someone to talk to.

Okay! Hi guys! I just felt like writing another story, I think my last one was in the last half of October... but I definitely want to make this a more of a regular thing, but only when I'm in the mood, because otherwise it's going to seem like a chore, which is the last thing I want.
Anyway, that is going to do it for this post, let me know what you thought in the comments!
I hope you have a lovely weekend, and I'll see you on Monday!

November Wrap Up (2018)

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And with the end of another month comes another Wrap up!
(And one big event happened this month...)
Enjoy!

BOOKS
I read a total of five books this month.
Four of which were on my TBR, one of which wasn't, which I will get into now.

1. A Shadow Bright and Burning (Kingdom on Fire #1), by Jessica Cluess
This book was a little slow at the start, but once I hit the 200 page mark, there was something both mysterious and kick-ass about the plot, the characters, the relationship between the different classes, (especially magicians and sorcerers,) which was very interesting. I couldn't put this book down after that point, and I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the trilogy.

2. The Grim Grotto (Series of Unfortunate Events #11), by Lemony Cricket
3. The Penultimate Peril (Series of Unfortunate Events #12), by Lemony Cricket
4. The End (Series of Unfortunate Events #13), by Lemony Cricket
I have loved every single one of these books, for the dark and twisty places it takes us to. The characters grow and change so much, and not just the Baudelaire. I even saw Count Olaf change just that little bit. As for whether I want to start watching the tv show now, or wait until Season 3 comes out so I can watch the show in it's entirety later, so I can watch it all at once, I haven't decided yet, but it's been wonderful to re-submerge myself into this world once more.

5. Slenderman, by Anonymous
I finished this just yesterday, and one thing I will mention is that one of my favourite parts were the newspaper clippings, the emails, and the text messages. It really added to a story that I feel, would have been less engaging otherwise. That's my personal opinion, given that the characters that were interacting through text message were around my age. But it meant I got to see the effect that Lauren Bailey's disappearance had on different people.

FILMS AND TV SHOWS
Films
The films I saw this month were:
You can see my full thoughts in my review (linked in the title), but my summary thoughts: I had a couple of problems with some things, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.

2. The Circle
Not a whole lot to say about this film. The book really frustrated me, so I knew what to expect when I clicked on the film. A decent and accurate rendition, the actors were incredibly well cast. It did a good job of explaining the world visually. I saw "explaining the world" because it's a completely different system, a different world, inside the Circle. And above all, incredibly easy to fall into the story. I recommend watching the film.

3. Dance Academy: The Comeback
All the characters from my favourite dance show of all time, Dance Academy: The Comeback. Bit of a cheesy name, but a new type of intensity from the tv show which was... interesting, to say the least. Eighteen months after Tara broke her back during her audition to get into the National Australian Ballet Company, she is left with a choice: risk a million pounds in a last ditch effort at the company, or say she'll never dance again. Of course she goes with the former! (There wouldn't be a movie otherwise.) Highly recommend this if you want an intense, beautiful, funny and fantastic tv show and film about chasing your dreams (and ballet of course.)

4. Raising the Bar
One of my films that I can watch over and over again, but still find that I enjoy it. Gymnastics, competition, friendship. Don't ask me why, I just like to watch it.

5. Robin Hood
This isn't the official poster, I just liked it the best. Let me just say, there have been several mixed reviews about this film, which I was aware of, and to be honest, I was kind of nervous going into the screening. But, I am happy to say that I did really enjoy this film. There were a couple of pacing problems when it came to a couple of scenes, but there were so many good quotes, so many amazing actions films, and it also had character development, so it basically had the whole package. It totally won me over. Review coming soon.

TV SHOWS
1. Dance Academy
I finished the tv show before watching the film. What I love about the show is the amount of themes that make an appearance in this show.

2. The Next Step
For some reason, I got completely hooked on Season 6 this month! I can't wait to see what happens next on this show, though I'm going to have to wait a while- or find some-place to watch it in the UK!

Okay! So that is my November Wrap Up! I'm not going to talk about writing, because I literally haven't written a word.
So that is going to be my post for today, I hope you enjoyed it!
Have a lovely weekend, I will see you all on Monday.

Autumn Book Haul

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And I've bought a couple of books recently, so I thought I'd do a book haul!
Enjoy!

1. Slenderman, by Anonymous
I'm currently reading this, and what I find the most interesting is that it isn't just a story (even though it is still fictional). It includes newspaper clippings and text message conversations. There's something about those things that makes it kind of addictive to pick up and read. I'm about half way through and I should finish it some time next week. I bought this for Halloween, but when it came to Halloween, I just didn't feel like picking it up. But I hope to enjoy it.

2. A Spark of Light, by Jodi Picoult
The latest in Jodi Picoult's ever growing list of novels. It takes place at a women's reproductive health service centre, when a desperate gunman runs in. You also get to read from the perspective of the policeman pursuing the centre, who finds out that his fifteen-year-old daughter is also within the centre. I haven't read a book from his kind of setting, and it kind of intrigues me as to how the copper is going to be affected, by knowing that his daughter is being held by gunpoint. Looking forward to reading this.

3. This Cruel Design (This Mortal Coil #2), by Emily Suvada
The second book in the Mortal Coil trilogy (?). I love how invested I became in the first books and I have high hopes for the second. I have absolutely no idea where the second novel is going to go, but I'm excited to find out.

4. Two Dark Reigns (Three Dark Crowns #3), by Kendare Blake
Book three out of four. With book one being one of my favourites of that year, and book two being slightly underwhelming, I don't know how I'm going to feel about this third book. I can't help but remember the Red Queen series, where I was at exactly the same point as I am with this series. Though I've enjoyed these books more. It's a fairly chunky book, so it might take me a while to work through it, but I'm looking forward to picking it up.

5. Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices #2), by Cassandra Clare
Yep. I have no idea when I'm going to get to this, but mark my words, it will be soon.

6. Room, by Emma O' Donoghue
This book has been on my radar for a while now. It's not meant to be a nice book, but it's meant to be an important one. I honestly don't know what I'm expecting, with this book. I know that it's from the perspective of five-year-old Jack, which is certainly a unique perspective. I also know that it's meant to be a powerful and it'll be interesting to read.

So that is my Autumn Book Haul! I hope you enjoyed it, and let me know if you have any thoughts on these books (that I've just listed.)
Anyway, that's my book haul, and that's going to do it for today! I hope you have a lovely day, and I'll see you all on Monday!

Crimes of Grindelwald Film Review

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And on Saturday I went to see The Crimes of Grindelwald!
Happy to share my thoughts!
Enjoy!

One thing I will say about this film: It had a very different feeling to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, for a multitude of reasons.
1) Because it was the second film, we didn't need as much introduction as the first film. (As for character development throughout the rest of the film, I'll get to that later.)
2)From the first scene, the focus was on Grindelwald, and the plot-line, compared to Fantastic Beasts, where we meet Newt arriving in New York.
But overall, it was a decent film. As for whether I enjoyed it more or less than Fantastic Beasts, I haven't quite made up my mind yet.
So this review will be a bit of a debate.

On one hand, I liked the direction The Crimes of Grindelwald took, how we were keeping track of both Grindelwald and Scamander were doing at one time, so it was easy to follow the story.
On the other hand, what I was craving was the sweet character conversations that I grew to love the characters through in the first film. There were only a couple of those conversations in this movie, and I really noticed their absence.
But in the absence of those conversation, a couple more characters were introduced that weren't in the first movie, that added an extra plotline to an already mysterious and dark plot. We were introduced to the young version of Albus Dumbledore, who was perfectly played by Jude Law, Newt's brother Thesis, and his fiancé, Leta Lestrange. Newt's relationship with both of the latter characters put a different spin into the overall story, which was personally one of my favourite parts.

Also, I liked that what was carried on from Fantastic Beasts was kept around in Crimes of Grindelwald. (I mean with both the Beasts capture and the obscurial plot.) The obscurial plotline was another plotline that was being weaved in and out of the story (all of these plotlines were very cleverly balanced out in my opinion). The capturing of the Beasts wasn't the main focus in this one, but it was still included, and it didn't feel forced, like it was added just for the sake of it.

Those are the positives.
Here are the things that I had a bit of a problem with:

Nothing was explained.
The film is titled "The Crimes of Grindelwald." But we don't get enough of Grindelwald's backstory, how he came to be the criminal he's known for today. I do however, get to find out what the characters mean when they say that Grindelwald is known as persuasive. Throughout the film, you get to see him show his true colours, and it's so interesting to see, especially as Dumbledore plays an integral part in his personality.

Also, the magic was a big one for me. There were certain spells that we've seen done a million times in the Harry Potter films in the past years. And then, they just go and change them! That was really irritating. I really hope they fix that.

Those are the only things.

So overall, I feel like this was an a really good second film, and all the plot points that we got to see in this film will come round in the next one, so it can be- incredible. (If that makes sense.)
If you get a chance to go and see this in 3D, I recommend it. It didn't add a whole lot to the film, but it's definitely better than it would have been if it was just 2D.

I hope you enjoyed this review, let me know in the comments what you thought and we can chat about it! You can access my review for Fantastic Beasts here.
Right! So that is my review, and that's going to do it for today! I hope you have a lovely day, and I will see you all on Friday!

Chocolate Book Tag

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And having done this blog for near enough three years, it's tough finding new tags.
But nevertheless, I've found one: The Chocolate Book Tag!
Enjoy!

1. Dark Chocolate- A Book That Covers A Dark Topic
Having bought another book by this author just on Sunday, this is the first book that sprung to mind. It's a book about suicide, and two characters. It's... hopeful, sad, and a beautiful read that I highly recommend (though not if you have any triggers about suicide.)

2. White chocolate- Your favourite light-hearted/ humorous read
It's an old time favourite. I read it for the first time years ago and it still remains one of my favourites. It may have some serious points, but I definitely consider it a light-hearted book, particularly in the conversations between Levi, Cath and Reagan.

Milk chocolate- A book that has a lot of hype that you're dying to read.
Having given up on the series after Throne of Glass and The Assassin's Blade a couple of years back, I'd decided that the series wasn't for me. But because of the hype, and the fact that I heard that it gets better after the second book, I'm thinking that next year, I'll start making my way through this series.

Chocolate with a caramel centre-Name a book that made you all gooey in the middle when you were reading it.
Although this story is made from an incident (that isn't included in the story- the protagonist's boyfriend dies of drowning) that isn't all that happy, the book itself is just so cute, I couldn't think of a better candidate for this question. What I love about this book is that there is a list, several goals, the usual structure of a story. Put that with happy parts, hopeful parts, and a whole lot of heart, and you've got this novel.

Wafer-free kit kat- Name a book that surprised you lately.
I don't really have one for this. I've mostly been reading the Series of Unfortunate Events since August, without many new books. So I'm going to have to skip this question.

Snickers- A book that you're going nuts about.
This series'. Always. This is one of my favourites, always has been, and every time I read it, from the time when I was reading it for the first time, about 8 years ago, I find something new every time within this series.

Hot chocolate with marshmallows- what book would you turn to for a comfort read.
A story about three generations, two perspectives. These women grow to listen to each-other, and face their fears head on. Some tension makes the story interesting, but what makes the story amazing is the relationships, the character arcs. Such a natural story.

What series have you read that you feel has a wide variety and a little something for everyone.
This series. There is none other, than the Harry Potter series.

TAGS
EVERYBODY! If you want to do the tag, you can!

Okay! So that is the Chocolate Book Tag! I hope you enjoyed it and I will see you soon!

November TBR (2018)

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And even though this is super late and a Tuesday, I'm thinking I'll post tonight and then again on Friday, when I have the time to write a long post.
For this month I actually don't know how much I'm going to stick to my TBR, but that's always going to be the case.
Enjoy!

1. A Shadow Bright and Burning (Kingdom on Fire #1), by Jessica Cluess
I have just under 100 pages left of this and I'm sure that I will finish it within the next 24 hours. I don't know as to whether I'm going to finish the second book in the trilogy before the end of the year, but I don't regret picking it up. One thing I will say is that it kind of creeps up on you, and before you know it, you're invested in the story, and... what the heck it all means! Can't wait to see how it all ends (really hope there isn't a cliffhanger...)

2. The Grim Grotto (Series of Unfortunate Events #11), by Lemony Snicket
3. The Penultimate Peril (Series of Unfortunate Events #12), by Lemony Snicket
4. The End (Series of Unfortunate Events #13), by Lemony Snicket

The last three books in the Series of Unfortunate Events series. It's been a long time coming, having started re-reading this series in August, but from this point on I know not as to what will happen next and I'm excited about rediscovering it, especially as series 3 of the Netflix tv show will be out soon, and I'll be able to marathon the entire series at some point of next year.

5. POLL!
That's right! There will be a poll on my Instagram (same name as my blog) as to what book I shall read.
The two options are:
1. Two Dark Reigns (Three Dark Crowns #3), by Kendare Blake
2. This Cruel Design ( This Mortal Coil #2), by Emily Suvada
Two books that I am really looking forward to picking up. One's fantasy, the other is a DNA type Sci-fi. Two different series'. You decide.

Okay! So that is my November TBR! I hope you enjoyed it, and I will see you all on Friday!

October Wrap Up (2018)

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And this month I haven't read many books, but I've watched and written a fair amount!
Here's what I got up to this month!

BOOKS
I read a total of 5 books this month, and I am currently in the middle of another. I'll talk about that one first:

-A Shadow Bright and Burning, by Jessica Cluess
I'm currently about 175 pages into this, and I have been making my way through it for the majority of the month. When I picked it up, I expected it to be an explosive, exciting book that doesn't stop to take a breath. Some of those scenes were like that, and each time I picked it up I was excited to read about, but it felt like explaining everything was more developed, especially when it came to explaining the world. So this month I have been picking it up when I felt like reading more, but it's not my main story at the moment, and I'm trying not to read more than I want to, as I may fall into a reading slump.

The books I finished this month:

1. He's After Me, by Chris Higgins
I saw this in a charity shop at the start of the month and because it's the last Chris Higgins book that I hadn't yet picked up, I went and bought it. What I loved about this book was that a character from a previous novel is one of the main characters in this novel, which I already knew. But this book was exactly the same as all her others, I couldn't put it down, and I read the whole thing in less than 24 hours. They're just so addictive, and they're always written so well, and this one in particular was so dark, it was almost like an intense thriller- and it was an emotional rollercoaster with panic, sadness, love and intrigue- this was the most roller-coaster-ish book I have had the pleaser to come across in a long time.

2. The Vile Village (Series of Unfortunate Events #7), by Lemony Snicket
3. The Hostile Hospital (Series of Unfortunate Events #8), by Lemony Snicket
4. The Carnivorous Carnival (Series of Unfortunate Events #9), by Lemony Snicket
5. The Slippery Slope (Series of Unfortunate Events #10), by Lemony Snicket

So, the plan for the Series of Unfortunate Events series in the month of October was to read the first three books that you see here, but because of the situation concerning A Shadow Bright and Burning, I basically went for four books because I was just in the mood to keep going with the series. I now have three books left in this series, and I'm getting nervous for how it's going to end! What I liked about these books is that a full 180 turn takes place within these books. We stop reading about just Count Olaf trying to steal the fortune, and a lot more different plotlines start getting introduced into the book that brings a lot more mystery and intrigue into the story, which is something that I've really enjoyed!

FILMS AND TV SHOWS
FILMS
If you want to see my full review for this film, you can click the link. But if you want the short version, I thoroughly enjoyed this film except for a couple of (fairly significant) points. But what this film was really good at, was showing the inspiration for each and every song Queen released (especially for the people that weren't alive to live through Freddie Mercury's story.)

2. The Shining
3. The Omen
I'm putting these two together because they are both classic 60s/70s horror movies that I watched this month. I enjoyed them both immensely, and I'm glad that I've finally watched them! (Even if the horror was a little bit cheesy.)

4. Coraline
Coraline is my go to Halloween film, purely because it includes Disney! It gives me a very Alice in Wonderland vibe, and I was glad to sink back into that very surreal, mystical world that you are never sure what to expect!

TV SHOWS
1. Anne with an E- Season 1
I've had my eye on this series for quite some time, so I decided to give it a try. 7 hours later and I've finished Season 1. Such a realistic series of what it would have been during that time period. The portrayal of Anne was on point, I loved the plot, watching Anne flourish in a place where she met challenge after challenge, because of her gender and her outspokenness, so I was rooting for her from the start. The script was also incredibly beautiful.

WRITING
Right! So I finished my summary! I am now looking for beta readers! (Not much more to say other than I am currently setting up paperwork for that but, if you are interested in being a beta reader, comment on this post, or message me on Instagram or twitter- whatmakesagoodbook on Instagram
@TheWorldIsBooks on Twitter).

So that is what I have been up to in October! There are certainly a lot of spooky films in there, and I'm glad I got to embrace the spooky mood as much as I did!
Right! I hope you enjoyed reading about what I did this month, have a lovely weekend, and I will see you on Monday!

Bohemian Rhapsody Film Review

Hey guys, this is Abi here,
And after watching the film Bohemian Rhapsody last night at the cinema, the first thing I did this morning is turn on my laptop to write the review.
Because I have some thoughts on it.

I just have to say that I love the aesthetic of the poster. The purple fading into yellow just really pulls your eye in. Its a simple poster, with a stage and the one and only Freddie Mercury performing on stage, and in my opinion, that's all the poster really needs to be. I just love how simple yet eye catching the whole poster is.

The Film
I had no expectations going into this film. I thought it would be a story about Freddie Mercury, his ups and downs with Queen, and an insight into his personal life. I got some of those things, and in this those moments I was singing along, (quietly, because I didn't want to be kicked out) having the time of my life as I witnessed Queen's rise to fame, but what I thought was lacking was the insight of what was happening in his personal life as his fame continued to rise.
Saying that, as much as I wish the film had got more into the thick of it, regarding Freddie's life from the time that he found out he had AIDS, I have to remember that it is a PG13 film, and it's more of a family friendly film, which it certainly was.

One thing that they did focus on quite a bit was Freddie's sexuality. That was one factor that was very well developed. There was one scene where Queen was at a press conference but instead of asking questions about the latest hit, they were asking (the word 'pressing' is kind of an understatement) questions about his sexuality instead. That scene was very well done and really grasped the idea of what it must have been for Mercury and any other person in the public eye at that time, what it must have felt like to be seen as queer.

Also, I got to find out more about the people that were in Mercury's life, instead of just Freddie Mercury alone. And I have to say, the people cast as these amazing people were absolutely perfect. You really got the feel of what it was like for Queen, in that recording studio, what their chemistry was like when they were making music. Also, the acting that came from Lucy Boynton (who played Mary) stood out in particular as perfect.

The best part of this film was the soundtrack (because it's Queen.) But what I enjoyed the most was how each big song was woven into the story. It really helped to see what inspired some of Queen's songs, especially as I wasn't alive when all of this was taking place, like some of the people I went to see the film with (I went with my mum, auntie and their friend.) Because I wasn't able to live through Mercury's story, it really helped me to see the bigger picture.
It was one of my favourite parts because it added so much to the story.

Overall, a really enjoyable film. My only critiques are that they could have gone into Mercury's experience living with AIDS, and the time between when Queen performed at Live Aid in 1985, and Mercury's death in 1991.
But other than that, I recommend going to see it with the best sound and picture you can, because this is one of those films when they do not hold back on the sound.
They are playing the film in IMAX, so if you can, go and see it in IMAX. (I just saw it in regular picture though and it was still amazing.)

Right, that is my review of Bohemian Rhapsody! I hope you enjoyed it, and let me know what you thought of the review, and the film if you've seen it!
That's all I have, and that's going to do it for this post!
